one day when i was googling some someone or other in my family an image of my mother came up next to an image of a lazy gilded bed that looked like it was still warm from its previous inhabitants. in the background were chipped statues, worn out paintings and crackly mirrors reflecting the crumpled linen sheets and velvety pillows piled on the bed.
this has nothing to do with my mother actually and the fact that google spewed out anything other than articles about president bush is indeed a miracle. but somehow it happened. i bypassed my sweet mother's picture (sorry mom, but i know what you look like) and clicked on the image of the bedroom that someone clearly ripped right from the pages of my dreams. (i dream in book form naturally).
now to tie in the president bush remark...my family name is bush. and what i stumbled upon that day was bush antiques.
bush antiques is a land of dreamy, old, poetically decayed furniture and art and oddities that is, not surprisingly, located in new orleans. old new orleans style has long been my absolute favorite style of decorating. more on that at another time.
the photo that originally caught my attention is long gone now and i'm sure some lucky soul is lounging around on that bed right now in their chantal thomass knickers, drinking wine and giggling with their lover. rolling around on wrinkled linen sheets. sigh. but i could find a place for the above two as well.
the owners suggest this gigantic french fireplace surround (holy cow!) be used as a built in bookcase. definitely a majestic way to house your beloved books or your kindle. (pah! never!)
i think that these moulin rouge-y valances would fit quite nicely in my bedroom. they would make a lovely frame through which i shall gaze while laying on my sultry old frenchie bed. with linen sheets. (i would really really like some linen sheets.) also, when i first saw this picture i thought that the ceiling was burgundy velvet. it's not, but now i must have a burgundy velvet ceiling with white walls and pink curtains.
so, that's the gist. i highly recommend visiting the website however as there are many, many vignettes of rooms that look like they may have once surrounded the lovely sarah bernhardt or the like.
i am so happy that this little eye feast fell onto my plate over 4 years ago. i still have never actually been to the real live store. when i finally make it to that beautiful old soulful city, it will be first on my list.
i check back every few months to see what they've added to their inventory or what kind of ideas i can snatch up and re-work in my house.
like these doors.
these doors are magical. they even have the ability to bring peace and unity to my home. i'm sure of it.
observe...
me: my dear and lovely child, you can't wear that to school. it isn't appropriate.
child: what are you, insane?!
me: please change your clothes.
child: are you serious? this is ridiculous. you're going to make me miss my bus!
me: please change your clothes.
child: you are crazy! (slams door in my face)
me: why i oughta... my goodness, are these doors ever lovely.
